Technion Strengthens Long-Standing Research Partnership with Leading German Institutions
The Technion – Israel Institute of Technology continues to deepen its longstanding international research collaboration with Germany’s RWTH Aachen University and the Jülich Research Center, as part of the Umbrella Cooperation – a partnership spanning nearly four decades.
The collaboration took on special significance last month, with an act of exceptional commitment by the hosts in Aachen. Following an initial exploration of the topic at Forschungszentrum Jülich in 2024, the 2025 symposium took a deeper dive into some of the most urgent scientific and technological challenges facing society today. Under the scientific leadership of Professor Dirk Uwe Sauer (RWTH Aachen University), Professor Michael Eikerling (Forschungszentrum Jülich), and Professor Avner Rothschild (Technion), discussions focused on climate change and the development of climate-neutral, affordable energy systems.

The conference addressed a broad range of cutting-edge research topics related to renewable energy conversion and storage. Discussions ranged from catalytic processes at the scale of single atoms and full electrodes, to large-scale planning of Germany’s electricity grid – aimed at integrating renewable energy sources to supply up to 80% of national electricity demand – as well as solutions developed in response to the Russian gas crisis following the war in Ukraine.
The event also highlighted excellence in international research through the presentation of the prestigious Umbrella Awards. Among this year’s recipients was Assistant Professor Charlotte Vogt of the Technion, whose work was recognized as an outstanding contribution to collaborative research within the framework of the partnership.
The Umbrella Cooperation reflects the Technion’s ongoing commitment to global scientific collaboration and to advancing innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing energy and sustainability challenges.
