For the First Time in Israel: The Israel Open Mathematics Championship
Israel’s first public “math marathon” will take place at the Technion on September 4; more than 600 participants have already registered
On September 4, the Technion campus will become the starting line for a first-of-its-kind event: the inaugural Israel Open Mathematics7 Championship. The Grossman Open Competition is a new offshoot of the long-running Grossman Mathematics Olympiad for Youth, designed to bring the joy of mathematical thinking to the general public and allow participants to tackle a variety of mathematical challenges.
Unlike conventional mathematics competitions, the open competition is open to anyone from age 3 to 120 who enjoys intellectual challenges, logic puzzles, and creative thinking. Participation requires registration only and is free of charge. More than 620 participants have already signed up.
Participants will tackle a series of thought-provoking challenges and questions that put the mind to work but require no academic background in mathematics. According to the organizers, there is no need for a degree, professional training, or any special background. All that is required is a desire to think, discover, and enjoy the challenge.
The initiative is led by the Grossman Committee, comprising senior faculty members and headed by Prof. Shay Moran, based on an idea by Dr. Yossi Cohen, who coordinates the competitions and youth summer camps at the Technion Faculty of Mathematics. This year’s questions were written by Prof. Ariel Rapaport and edited by members of the committee, including researchers who themselves participated in mathematics olympiads.
“The goal of the championship is to show that mathematics is not the exclusive domain of experts,” explains Dr. Cohen. “Just as anyone can stand at the starting line of a public race, anyone can take part in the challenge of creative thinking, curiosity, and problem-solving.”
Beyond the competition itself, participants can look forward to a festive, fun-filled event featuring refreshments and surprises, as well as an opportunity to meet mathematics enthusiasts from across Israel and take part in a historic, first-of-its-kind event.
The Grossman Open Competition will take place on Friday, September 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in Auditoriums 1 and 6 of the Kahn Building, alongside the Grossman Mathematics Olympiad for Youth, which has been held at the Technion for many years. As noted, participation is free of charge; registration is the only requirement.
