Researchers at the Technion Win BARD Foundation Grants Promoting Israel–U.S. Research Collaboration
Research Collaboration. Professors Yoav Livney and Avi Shpigelman to Advance R&D in the Field of Meat Alternatives.
Prof. Yoav Livney and Associate Prof. Avi Shpigelman, researchers at the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Engineering, have been awarded research grants from the BARD Foundation – a binational Israel–U.S. research fund that supports applied research in agriculture and food.
Prof. Livney received the grant in collaboration with Prof. John Cooper from Washington University in St. Louis and Prof. Roberto Dominguez from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Together, they will develop an innovative approach to achieving meat-like textures using proteins derived from microbial sources. Assoc. Prof. Avi Shpigelman received his grant in collaboration with Prof. Youling Xiong from the University of Kentucky. Together, they will work on improving the nutritional properties and safety of meat alternatives.
The BARD Foundation funds collaborations between researchers in both countries, with an emphasis on strategic, applied, and innovative research aimed at promoting sustainable solutions. The foundation fulfills its vision through support for academic research, research that encourages industrial collaboration, and more.
