As part of the privacy policy we implement at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (hereinafter, the “Technion”), we publish this document, which details the Technion’s privacy policy for users of all its websites (hereinafter the “Website” or “Websites”), as well as any other online services related thereto (collectively the “Services”).

The Technion is committed to protecting your privacy and the Personal Information you share with us as part of your use of the Services, which include a variety of actions such as: filling in details to express interest in studies, applying for admission, registering for studies, making online payments (including registration and tuition fees), registering for events, using portals and systems, and contacting us to receive information.

You are requested to review this document before using the Website and/or the Services offered therein.

This privacy policy will detail and clarify the information collected by the Technion about users of the Website, how the information is collected, the use made of the information, the period for which the information is retained, the rights of the information subjects, as well as the cases in which the Technion transfers the information to third parties and how the information is stored by the Technion. The document may be updated from time to time, and therefore, before each use of the Website, it is recommended to review its sections again. For the avoidance of doubt, your continued use of the Website after such an update is made will be considered your consent to these changes.

It is emphasized that you are under no legal obligation to provide us with Personal Information, as defined below in this document. The provision of Personal Information depends on your free will and consent. However, without providing the requested information or part of it, we may not be able to provide you with the requested Services on the Website, in whole or in part. By using the Website, including the services offered therein, you agree to this privacy policy.

 

Controller of the Database

In accordance with the Protection of Privacy Law, 5741-1981 (hereinafter the “Protection of Privacy Law”), and this privacy policy, the Technion is the controller of the databases, and its details are:

Data Protection Officer

As required by the Protection of Privacy Law, the Technion has appointed a Data Protection Officer who is responsible for handling privacy protection matters according to law. She can be contacted by email at: dpo@technion.ac.il.

 

Collection of Information

During your use of the Website, information may be collected in the following ways:

  1. Information you provide on your own initiative – information you provide to the Technion, inter alia through online forms, inquiries, requests to be contacted, or as part of expressing interest in studies at the Technion, including when applying for admission.
  2. Subscription to the mailing list – when you request to join the Technion’s mailing list (newsletter).
  3. Information collected automatically – through your use of the Website, including through cookies and other technological means as detailed hereinafter.

 

“Personal Information”

Data relating to an identified or identifiable person; for the purpose of this definition, an “identifiable person” is one who can be identified with reasonable effort, directly or indirectly, including by means of an identifying detail, such as a name, identification number, biometric identifier, location data, online identifier, or one or more data points relating to their physical, health, economic, social, or cultural status.

 

Purposes of Use of Information

The Technion collects information about you for the following purposes – all or some of them:

  1. For the purpose of and in connection with the provision of the Services provided by the Technion or by anyone on its behalf, including registration for studies, management of studies, and provision of academic and administrative services;
  2. Operation and management of the Website, monitoring the Website’s performance, identifying malfunctions, and information security.
  3. To enable you to perform actions through the Website;
  4. For the purpose of improving and developing the Services provided by the Technion;
  5. For the purpose of contacting users;
  6. For the purpose of analysis, research, and compiling statistics, improving the user experience, and adapting the content and services to the users’ needs;
  7. For the purpose of conducting surveys among users;
  8. Subject to your express consent – for the purpose of marketing and advertising the Technion’s services, including displaying relevant advertisements that will be presented to you;
  9. For the purpose of analysing user profiles on the Website for marketing products, including but not limited to on the internet;
  10. For the purpose of direct mailing, as defined in the law;
  11. For the purpose of defending against lawsuits, demands, and claims against the Technion and anyone on its behalf, as well as against third parties;
  12. For the purpose of enforcing the provisions of the Terms of Use and this privacy policy;
  13. For the purpose of complying with the provisions of any law.

 

Period of Information Retention

The Technion will retain your Personal Information as long as it is required for the purposes detailed in this privacy policy, or for the period required by law or permitted by law.

 

Transfer of Information to Third Parties

  1. The Technion will not transfer or provide information to third parties, except as detailed in the privacy policy and for the purposes detailed above.
  2. The transfer of information to third parties will be done in accordance with the rules and limitations stipulated by law.
  3. The transfer of information to third parties will include only relevant information that does not exceed the purposes of use above for which the information is transferred and will be carried out in a manner proportionate to a defined, explicit, and legitimate purpose.
  4. The Technion may transfer the information or any part of it to third parties in one or more of the following cases:
    1. Transfer of information to third parties that have contracted with the Technion to provide various services, including, inter alia, support services for security systems and information technology (IT) systems, data storage services, payment clearance services, website development services, survey and research services, corporations related to the Technion, courier and logistics companies, direct mailing services, lawyers or other external professional advisors, as well as other third parties that provide the Technion with services in connection with its activities.
    2. Receipt of an order, including a judicial order, instructing the Technion to provide details or information about you in accordance with the provisions of any law.
    3. Any dispute, claim, demand, lawsuit, or legal proceedings between you or anyone on your behalf and the Technion and/or anyone on its behalf.
    4. Transfer and/or sale and/or assignment and/or acquisition, of the Technion and/or its assets and/or any part thereof, for consideration or not for consideration, inter alia, in cases where ownership of the Website and/or its content, in whole or in part, is transferred to third parties, including but not limited to in the case of a merger of the Technion and/or its activity with third parties, and including, without derogating from the generality of the foregoing, in cases of a change of control, full or partial, in the Technion.
    5. If a claim is raised or if the Technion suspects that you have committed an act and/or omission that may harm the Technion, anyone on its behalf, and/or any third parties, including other users.
    6. When the Technion believes that the provision of the information is necessary to prevent damage to the Technion, to you, or to any third party.
  5. The Technion transfers some of the information to third parties as stated in this section, some of whom are located abroad [storage providers, cloud applications, partner academic institutions abroad, etc.]. Such a transfer of information will be carried out in accordance with the Protection of Privacy Regulations (Transfer of Information to Databases Outside the State Borders), 5761-2001, and subject to data processing agreements and/or confidentiality and information security agreements, as required by law. When making a payment on the Website – whether for the purpose of applying for studies, paying tuition, or any other payment to the Technion – your credit card details are transferred within the Tranzila system directly to Interspace Ltd. (hereinafter “Payment Clearance Company”), for the purpose of completing the transaction. Payment on the Website, including the transfer of credit card details, is secured in accordance with the PCI-DSS standard and is protected by encrypted communication using the SSL protocol by the Payment Clearance Company. The Technion does not store credit card details in its systems; the data is managed using a unique identifier issued and held exclusively by the Payment Clearance Company. It is your responsibility to review the Payment Clearance Company’s privacy policy on its website at: https://www.tranzila.com prior to making the payment.

 

Links

  1. The Technion’s Website may include links or references to external websites that are not owned by the Technion (hereinafter the “External Websites”) and/or shortcuts to social networks (such as Meta products, LinkedIn, YouTube, X network (Twitter), etc.). These external websites are not at the responsibility of the Technion, and clicking on links will lead the user to the External Website, which is subject to the privacy policy and terms of use of the External Websites.
  2. The Technion is not responsible for, does not control, and does not supervise the External Websites. The fact that the Website links to these contents does not indicate consent to their content and does not constitute a guarantee of their reliability, timeliness, legality, the privacy practices of the content owners, or any other aspect related to their operation.
  3. Regarding links to External Websites, unless otherwise stated on this Website, there are no legal or commercial relationships between the Technion and the owners of third-party websites.
  4. The Technion does not guarantee that the links found on the Website will be valid and will lead users to an active website, and the Technion may remove links that were previously included, or refrain from adding new links – all at its absolute discretion.
  5. The Technion shall not be liable for any loss, expense, damage, or harm, direct or indirect, caused as a result of using the External Websites or the content appearing on them, and any use of them is at the user’s responsibility.
  6. We recommend that the user review the privacy policy and terms of use of the External Websites.

 

Cookies

  1. During the use of the Website, information or data may be collected during the normal operation of the Website’s internet service through the use of text files called “cookies”. “Cookies” files may contain non-identifying information such as the pages you visited, the duration of your stay on the Website, where you came from to the Website, information you wish to see when entering the Website, the type of device you entered from, the type of operating system and its version, and more.
  2. The use of cookies is intended to enable the ongoing and proper operation of the Website, to improve the user experience, to collect statistical data about the use of the Website, to adapt personal content, to improve the Technion’s Services, and to display tailored advertisements and marketing messages – on the Technion’s Websites and on external websites.
  3. You can manage or block the use of cookies through your browser settings. However, blocking cookies may prevent access to some of the services, functions, or content on the Website.
  4. The Technion may allow third parties (such as analytics or advertising service providers) to place cookies for the purpose of analysing website usage data and displaying tailored content. This use will be subject to the provisions of the law.

 

Direct Mailing

Users will be entitled to subscribe to the mailing list on the Website by providing personal details to receive marketing and/or advertising or other information from the Technion.

The sending of content may be done by any means of communication, including mail, email, telephone and mobile phone, text messages, social networks, and other means (and even with the assistance of third parties). The use of the information you have provided to the Technion, including your full name, email address, phone number, and the like, will be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the law and this privacy policy.

Users may at any time request to be removed from the mailing list by contacting the Technion through the Website or by clicking on a removal link. Upon receipt of the removal request, the sending of content will cease, and an instruction will be issued to stop using the information for direct mailing purposes. However, some of the information may continue to be stored in the Technion’s databases for other essential purposes, all subject to the provisions of the law and the purposes detailed in this policy.

 

Information Security

The Technion takes technical, organizational, and physical measures regarding the protection of privacy and information security of the databases it manages according to law, in accordance with accepted standards and subject to the Protection of Privacy Law, the regulations enacted thereunder, and the guidelines of the Privacy Protection Authority, as they may be from time to time. However, it is known that the storage and transfer of information by electronic means, including via the internet, are not completely immune. It is the user’s responsibility to maintain the confidentiality of their username and password; we recommend not sharing them with other parties and maintaining their confidentiality. In any case where you have reason to believe that the transfer of information to the Technion is no longer secure, please update us as soon as possible through the contact means in the “Controller of the Database” section.

 

Rights of Data Subjects

According to the Protection of Privacy Law, 5741-1981, every person is entitled to review, by himself or by his representative authorized in writing or by a guardian, the information about him held in a database. A person who has reviewed the information about him and found it to be incorrect, incomplete, unclear, or not up-to-date, may submit a request to correct or delete the information.

Requests to review, correct, or delete personal information can be submitted by written request to the Data Protection Officer at the Technion, at the email address: dpo@technion.ac.il. Your request will be answered in accordance with the provisions of the law.

 

Applicable Law and Jurisdiction

  1. The law applicable to this privacy policy, as well as any change or amendment to it, as well as the use of the Website, is the Israeli law only, without reference to its conflict of law provisions.
  2. In any case of dispute, the competent courts in the Haifa district shall have exclusive jurisdiction to hear the claim.
  3. It is clarified that the provisions of this chapter also apply to a user who is not a resident and/or citizen of Israel, and in no case shall a claim be heard that Israel is not a proper forum and/or that foreign law should apply to any engagement related to this Website.

 

Changes and Updates

The Technion may change the provisions of this privacy policy from time to time, and it is your responsibility to follow these updates. In the event of a material change to the privacy policy, a notice will be posted on the Website’s homepage. Your continued use of the Website and the Technion’s Services after the changes are published constitutes your consent to these changes. We recommend, in any case, to periodically update yourself on the privacy policy.
