The Power of Diversity

The Technion trains Diversity Ambassadors to promote awareness of human diversity on campus

The first training cycle for Diversity Ambassadors at the Technion was completed recently by 18 participants from various academic and administrative units.

Prof. Firas Mawase from the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, who took part in the program, shared his motivation: “As a parent of three children and a mentor to dozens of students past and present, I felt a responsibility to take active steps – for our sake and for future generations – to emphasize the true meaning of social justice. It is important to recognize and understand others, even when they are different from us, and to respect every person while upholding our values without a sense of inferiority. Wanting to contribute to this change, I joined the Technion’s Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors initiative. The program was exactly what I was looking for. This was not only because of the rich content – some of which highlighted the complex reality we still face – but especially because of the people I met. They share my values and vision that open and respectful dialogue, without superiority or inferiority, is the only way to create a diverse, equal, and just society that respects everyone alike.”

Participants received training on diversity and inclusion in global and local contexts, intergroup relations, awareness of biases and different identities, and how to lead projects that promote diversity in their immediate environment and across the Technion. The training was led by Dr. Soli Vered from the aChord Institute, with the support of the Edmond de Rothschild Foundation.

The initiative aims to support proactive activities that advance diversity and inclusion across faculties and administrative units. Discussions covered a range of topics, including gender, international students, and addressing the needs of students from different religious backgrounds.

Moran Rakovitzky from the Faculty of Computer Science shared her experience: “I was happy to take part in the Diversity and Inclusion Ambassador training at the Technion. I was left with a strong sense of mission and the belief that even a small drop of water is part of a powerful, flowing stream. Even small changes in our daily lives can lead to significant impact. Additionally, I had the pleasure of meeting wonderful people from various Technion units, which was truly a great experience.”
