Technion’s 9th Annual Race Marks the Institute’s Centennial
900 runners—students, alumni, faculty, and Haifa community members—took part in the 9th Technion Race on April 2, 2025, celebrating 100 years since the Technion first opened its doors
Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan and Technion Student Association Chairman Itay Israel started the 5km race, continuing a beloved campus tradition organized by the Technion, the Student Association, and ASA Technion.
Prof. Uri Sivan: “In this extraordinary year, as we celebrate the Technion’s centennial, it’s inspiring to see all of you—from young students to veteran faculty—come together in this race, which embodies community, sports, and academic spirit. Well done, and best of luck to all!”
Haifa Deputy Mayor Yosi Shalom said, “The race is a powerful symbol of the deep bond between the Technion, the city, and its community. The Technion has been a leader in science and innovation for a century—I wish it continued success for the next hundred years. It is a true source of pride for Haifa.”
Inspiring Stories from the Finish Line
Rami Handeli (80), a 1969 Civil Engineering graduate, completed the race, saying: “Determination and perseverance are what cause me not to stop. Life is like a staircase; keep climbing. The Technion is the greatest place I could have studied at. I’ll be back to run at 85!”
Mahmoud Hamouda, who lost his sight at age 15, finished alongside Dr. Keren Censor from the Taub Faculty of Computer Science. They train as part of the “Eye Contact” initiative, where visually impaired runners partner with volunteer guides. Hamouda, a psychotherapist from Bu’eine Nujeidat and group leader, shared that his team has experience in marathons and ultra-marathons.
