Technion Prof. Debbie Lindell Elected to the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO)
Prof. Debbie Lindell of the Technion’s Faculty of Biology has been elected to membership in the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). EMBO members are recognized for their outstanding achievements in the life sciences. According to EMBO Director Fiona Watt, EMBO membership celebrates their achievements and creativity.
Prof. Lindell, an internationally renowned researcher in marine microbial ecology, holds the Dresner Chair in Life Sciences and Medicine at the Technion. Her research focuses on the impact of viruses on marine ecosystems, from the level of individual cells to processes that influence entire oceans.

Her early research revealed horizontal gene transfer between the marine bacterium Prochlorococcus and the viruses that infect it. Her subsequent work has demonstrated how viral infections shape the ecology, evolution, and genetics of microorganisms. As part of this research, she has developed important technologies for studying virus-bacteria interactions. Her exceptional scientific contributions and leadership within the global scientific community led to her election this year to the American Academy of Microbiology and the European Academy of Microbiology as well as to her receipt of the prestigious Hutchinson Award from the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO). She has now also been elected an EMBO member.
EMBO is an international organization comprising scientists from 30 countries, including more than 90 Nobel laureates. The organization supports talented researchers at every stage of their careers, promotes the exchange of scientific knowledge, and helps foster a rich research environment that enables scientists to realize their full potential.
