Stef Wertheimer, a Pioneer of Israeli Industry, Dies at 98
Wertheimer was an Honorary Doctor and Honorary Member of the Technion Board of Governors
The Technion mourns the death of Stef Wertheimer, an honorary doctor and honorary member of its Board of Governors. A visionary pioneer of Israeli industry, Wertheimer made significant contributions to education and entrepreneurship. In 1992, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Technion “in recognition of his pioneering contributions to education and entrepreneurship, the development of industrial exports and the Israeli economy, and the advancement of the State of Israel.”

Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan paid tribute to Wertheimer, stating, “Israeli industry owes a great debt to Stef for its growth, development, and global expansion. He was a pioneer, leader, entrepreneur, and devoted Zionist. His contributions to Israel’s economy and society were vast and transformative. He was an honorary member of the Technion Board of Governors, a distinction reserved for a select few who have made significant contributions to the Technion. On behalf of the entire Technion community, I extend my deepest condolences to his family.”
Born in Germany in 1926, Wertheimer immigrated to Israel with his family in 1937. As a technical officer and expert, he played a key role in strengthening the security of the Jewish community. In the backyard of his home in Nahariya, he founded a small workshop that eventually grew into the ISCAR company. He later established the Tefen Industrial Park and relocated ISCAR there. In time, the ISCAR Group was sold for $6 billion.
Wertheimer also served as a Knesset member and was awarded the Israel Prize in 1991 for his exceptional contributions to society and the state. He was recognized by the Ministry for the Development of the Negev and Galilee for his contribution to the Galilee, and received the President’s Medal of Distinction and the Industry Leaders Award. On Israel’s 58th Independence Day, he had the honor of lighting a torch at the national ceremony.
May his memory be a blessing.
