Connective Media

Risks of Some Herbal Medicines for Cancer Patients

Nearly two-thirds of the herbal medicines used by cancer patients in the Middle East have potential health risks, according to a new survey led by Professor Eran Ben-Arye, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology researcher.

Professor Eran Ben-Arye

The study published in the journal Cancer concludes that herbal remedies such as turmeric may increase the toxic effects of certain chemotherapies, while gingko biloba and green teas could increase the risks of bleeding in some cancer patients. Other herbs including black cumin and turmeric can alter the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

The study focused on cancer patients in the Middle East. In all, 29 of the 44 most popular herbal medicines used in 16 Middle Eastern countries—from Turkey to Tunisia—could pose one or more health risks to cancer patients in the region.

“In the Middle East, herbs are commonly used as part of traditional medicine, based on the impressive affinity of the people here to the herbal heritage that continuously prospers from the time of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia,” Ben-Arye said.

The findings come from a survey conducted by Ben-Arye and colleagues, who asked more than 300 cancer care providers in the countries about the kinds of herbal medicines their patients were using. They found that 57% of the providers had patients who used at least one herbal remedy. Women and Muslim providers were more likely to report having patients who used the herbs.

Although many patients use the herbs without telling their physicians, in this study Ben-Arye and colleagues wanted to focus on cancer care providers who are aware of their patients’ herbal supplement use. In general, Middle Eastern cancer care providers have a skeptical view of these alternative medicines, Ben-Arye said. However, his studies show that the providers also support the idea of having a physician consultant on a patient’s cancer care team who can speak to ”the effectiveness and safety of these herbal practices along with conventional cancer treatments,” he noted.

Patients feel similarly, Ben-Arye suggested. “In the majority of cases, patients seek to combine the best of the two worlds and do not perceive herbal medicine as a real alternative to modern oncology care.”

Patients most often turn to the herbs to enhance their quality of life and to cope better with the effects of their treatment, Ben-Arye added, rather than use them in an attempt to cure their cancers.

The countries in the survey with the highest rates of herbal medicine use included Turkey, the Palestinian Authority and Qatar. Stinging nettle, garlic, black cumin and turmeric were among the most used herbs, with other items such as camel’s milk and honey also making the list.

The researchers hope the new study will guide cancer care providers as they offer “open, non-judgmental” advice about the safety and effectiveness of herbal medicines.

“The majority of patients would hope to share their experience and questions of herbal option with their health care provider ‘at home’ within the oncology department rather than ‘outside’ where non-professionals and sometimes charlatans suggest miraculous potions,” Ben-Arye said.

Chinese Education Fund to grant scholarships in the amount of 8 million dollars for Chinese students that will study at Technion

33The gift agreement was signed in the presence of Haifa city Mayor and the Mayor of the city of Handan, China, the Technion President and the Donor (Zhao Hanqing)

The Hanqing International Education Foundation will provide scholarships in the amount of 8 million dollars to Chinese students coming to study at Technion. The gift agreement was signed today in the presence of Mr. Yona Yahav, the Mayor of Haifa, Professor Peretz Lavie, Technion’s President, Chinese businessman Zhao Hanqing, and Hui Jian, Mayor of Handan, China, the birthplace of the donor.

According to the agreement, the scholarships will support excellent Chinese students accepted to study at Technion, upon having met the university’s strict entrance criteria. In its initial phase, the students chosen to receive these scholarships will be those pursuing advanced degrees (Masters and Ph.D.s). They will receive an annual scholarship and financial support in the amount of $35,000 (each), to cover all of their expenses during the year.  Initially, the fund will support five students each year, and this number is expected to gradually grow until it reaches 25 students within five years time. An Executive Council will be appointed to oversee the Fund’s operations, comprised of six individuals of which three will be from Technion and three from the Foundation. This agreement is for 20 years.

Technion’s President, Professor Peretz Lavie, thanked Chinese businessman Zhao Hanqing for this generous gift and said, “This is a historic agreement that will enable Chinese students to study and do research at Technion. The Technion played a fundamental role in the development of Israel, and I am certain that Chinese students studying here at Technion will learn valuable tools and skills that will help them in advancing the development of their country.”

The Mayor of Haifa, Mr. Yona Yahav, welcomed the agreement, and said, “Haifa is home to the greatest numbers of Nobel Laureates in Israel. Shanghai is our twin city and we are excited to expand our cooperation with the city of Handan. We are building a life sciences park in the city center, which will transform Haifa into Israel’s number one university city.”

The Mayor of Handan, Mr. Hui Jian, said, “This agreement is the beginning of a greater cooperation between the cities of Haifa and Handan, and between China and Israel. Handan is a city with a population of ten million people, and we are intending to undergo an industrial transformation that will move the city’s industry base from energy, mining and textiles, to high-technology industries centered on computing and biomedicine. We view the Chinese students that will study here at Technion as the future leaders of this process.

Mr. Zhao Hanqing thanked the Technion for its cooperation and said that it is not surprising that Technion is considered among the best technological universities in the world. He added that he is confident that the excellent Chinese students that will arrive to the Technion following this agreement, will apply the vast knowledge base they would absorb during their studies here, to advance the economic development of his country.

Professor Boaz Golany, Technion Vice President for External Relations & Resource Development said that he is confident that the Chinese students who will come to study at Technion will strengthen the ties of cooperation between the two countries.

Last week, Mme. Gao Yanping, Chinese Ambassador to Israel, was hosted at the Technion. She spoke about the growing technological cooperation between China and Israel and large potential for academic cooperation between the Technion and China. “The enrollment period for the summer term at Chinese universities have recently come to a close. Out of nine million candidates, seven million were accepted,” she said with pride. “Technion is a world-class technological institution,” she added. “If I would be able to turn back time, I would have liked to have been a student here.”

The Wild Life of Aging Stars (and Planets): Leaving home, exchanging partners, and taking part in violent collisions

42Scientists from Technion and the University of Colorado, Boulder have taken a closer look at how stars systems and their planets grow old together.

The influence of stellar aging on systems composed of three stars in orbit about each other is particularly intriguing. Binary stars systems where one of the stars is orbited by a planet, react similarly to stellar maturation. Stars and planets in these systems can change orbital partners. In some cases, they may even collide or be expelled from the star system all together. This wild and turbulent scenario may have produced of the brightest star system in the sky, Sirius A and B. These findings raise the possibility that collisions between stars are more common (at least 30 times over) than conventional wisdom has shown.

Most stars either live a solitary existence, or pair up with one other star to make a binary system. However 15 percent of all stars orbit at least two other stars, forming a triple star system. Similarly, planets can be “hosted” by a binary system, which then behave much like a triple star system except that one object is vastly smaller than the other two. The evolution of stars in these systems can generate dramatic outcomes. The aging process of stars involves many major changes: a star can expand to a circumference greater than hundreds of times its original size, and then lose most of its mass in intense winds. At the end of this process the stellar core, a white dwarf, is all that is left behind.  While much work has been devoted to understanding the evolution of single and binary star systems, studies on the evolution of triple stars are novel As is evident in the most recent research of Prof. Hagai Perets from the Faculty of Physics at Technion University, and Dr. Kaitlin Kratter from CU-Boulder, triple-star systems and their evolution are deserving of more interest. “Binary stars are systems that are generally stable,” says Perets. “The triple-star systems, on the other hand, are much more fragile,” and thus susceptible to disruption.

When mass is lost from one star during the ageing process, all of the orbits in the system change. These changes can induce dynamical instability, driving the system into a wild dynamic ‘dance,’ whereby the stars exchange partners until one of them gets expelled from the system altogether. Because the mass losing star begins to swell as it ages, it becomes a large target, significantly increasing its chances of crashing into another star in the midst of its wild ‘dance.’

Ordinarily, stars only collide in dense star clusters (systems with millions of stars packed into a volume of only a few cubic light years; for comparison, within the same volume in the neighbourhood of the Solar system there is only one star – the sun). Even in these dense clusters, the probability of a collision is very low.

“We discovered that when it comes to triple star systems, there is a different picture all together. Star collisions outside of dense star clusters can occur at a rate of 30 times higher in comparison to those coincidental collisions that occur within star clusters,” says Perets.

An answer to a Sirius mystery

According to Perets and Kratter, this type of chaotic evolution may be relevant to one of the best known stars, Sirius – the brightest star in the sky.  Sirius is accompanied by a white dwarf in a binary system, but on a very eccentric orbit. This configuration is unusual for a star in a close orbit to a white dwarf; astronomers normally expect such orbits to be nearly circular, due to the exchange of mass between the stars as they age. The most recent findings show that this strange configuration may be explained if the Sirius binary system is the remnant of a triple system that became unstable and lost a star. “This surprising revelation that the triple evolution scenario we studied could solve the decades old mystery related to our brightest night-time star, Sirius, is very exciting; it appears that Sirius had a much wilder history than we could have ever imagined,” adds Perets.

Planetary “star-hoppers”

What would you do if your neighbourhood started to deteriorate? Would you consider moving to a better neighbourhood? It seems as if planets might make the same decision. Kratter and Perets also investigated systems where one of the three elements is not a star but a planet. Much like the case with three stars, mass loss by the planet-host can drive the planet into an unstable, chaotic orbit. The outcome, says Kratter, is surprising. “A planet can actually change which star it orbits, bouncing back and forth between the two.” Sometimes, such a star-hopper will settle down into a new, stable orbit around the companion star.  More often, this story has an unhappy ending. It is more likely that the planet will collide with one of the two stars during its voyages between the two. Such a collision would obliterate the planet.
