Technion Leads Israeli Universities with US Patents<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n The Technion is Israel\u2019s leading university for registering patents in the United States with 56 patents approved in 2017, according to data from the US Patent and Trademark Office. In the list of the world\u2019s top 100 universities registering patents in the US, the Technion ranked 39th \u2013 a jump of 14 places in a year, after being ranked 53rd in 2016.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n In the ranking, the Technion is ahead of top global universities such as Yale, the University of Tokyo, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, and the French \u00c9cole Polytechnique. The highest rank went to the University of California, followed by MIT, the University of Texas, and Stanford University. Tel Aviv University ranked 64<\/span>th<\/span> and the Hebrew University 82<\/span>nd<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n The 2017 ranking was published last month by the NAI (National Academy of Inventors) and IPO (Intellectual Property Owners Association) and is based on data from the US Patent and Trademark Office. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe institutions on this list are doing incredible work promoting academic innovation and incubating groundbreaking technologies which exemplify the importance of technology transfer to institutional success,\u201d said NAI President Paul R. Sanberg. \u201cIt is a privilege to showcase the vital contributions to society made by universities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThis joyous achievement expresses our approach to the interaction between basic science and applied science,\u201d said Technion President Prof. Peretz Lavie. \u201cAt the inauguration of the Technion\u2019s first class in 1924, Menachem Ussishkin said, \u201cPractical science and basic science are two sides of the same coin.\u201d Since then, this concept has been part of the Technion\u2019s DNA. Quality research does not contradict applied science, but rather supports it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Technion\u2019s patent registration is led by its commercialization unit, <\/span>T\u00b3<\/a><\/strong><\/span> (Technion Technology Transfer)<\/a>,<\/strong><\/span> which is part of the Technion R&D Foundation.
