\u00a0The US National Academy of Engineering has elected 11 new scientists and industrialists from outside the United States \u2013 two of them from the Technion (Professors Alon Gany from the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and Professor Moshe Shoham from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering) and another from the Weizmann Institute of Science (Professor David Harel).<\/p>\n
Professor Emeritus Alon Gany was elected to the prestigious academy for his advances in the development of solid propellants for rockets and scramjets, and Professor Moshe Shoham was selected for his contributions to robotic technology for image-guided surgery (in particular the Mazor robotics guidance system for spine surgery).<\/p>\n
The US National Academy of Engineering is the most prestigious in the world. This year, 67 new members were elected, 56 of whom are American citizens. Today there are 2,250 members; there are 214 non-American members in the Academy.<\/p>\n
Membership in the Academy is considered the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research and education, engineering innovation, applied engineering research and engineering literature, and in recognition of significant pioneering efforts in the development of new engineering fields and in making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering.<\/p>\n
