International Workshop

of the

on

Surface Phenomena
and
Free Surface Flows

26-29 June, 2003

Technion, Haifa, Israel

with support from the

Minerva Center for Nonlinear Physics of Complex Systems

and the

Institute of Theoretical Physics at the Technion

Objective:  To bring together scientists from different disciplines (physics, mechanics, materials science, applied mathematics, engineering) working on basic properties and applications of physical systems where the interplay between discrete and continuum descriptions plays a vital role.

The main topics include:  Motion and stability of contact lines, wetting, and fluid dynamics of thin films. The main emphasis is on mesoscopic aspects of flow and transport processes near interfaces, incorporating both intermolecular and macroscopic interactions.

The Program

Scientific Committee:  Manuel Velarde (Universidad Complutense, Madrid, Spain), Yves Pomeau (Ecole Normal Superieur, Paris, France), Terry Blake (Kodak European R & D, U.K.), Jean-Claude Legros (Free University of Brussels, Belgium), Stephen Davis (Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, U.S.A.)

Organizing Committee:  Len Pismen (Department of Chemical Engineering, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, 32000 Haifa, Israel), Simcha Srebnik (Department of Chemical Engineering, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, 32000 Haifa, Israel), Alexander Golovin (Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, U.S.A.), Steven Lipson (Department of Physics, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, 32000 Haifa, Israel), Alexander Nepomnyashchy (Department of Mathematics, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, 32000 Haifa, Israel).

Registration
Participants who had been invited to this conference before its postponement will soon be contacted once again regarding participation in the rescheduled conference. Additional applications to participate in and/or make a scientific presentation at this symposium are now also solicited by the organizing committee. Please make every effort to mail your form in time to ensure that it reaches us before that date. The workshop will commence on the morning of Thursday, 26 June, 2003, so participants should reach Shoresh by Wednesday, 25 June, and will end on Sunday afternoon, 29 June.

Registration Form

Talks - Abstracts
If you are interested in giving a talk, please indicate this on the registration form, including a proposed title, and return it to us together with a short abstract. Abstracts should be up to one page in length and should be e-mailed in LaTeX to the address given on the Registration Form.

Support
Limited funds are available to contribute towards the local expenses of young researchers.

Accommodation
The Workshop will take place on 26-29 June 2003 at the Hotel Shoresh, a Kibbutz resort in wooded hills about half-way between Jerusalem and Ben Gurion airport. A NATO Research Workshop on Continuous Models and Discrete Systems will take place at the same location starting Monday 30 June, and we expect that a number of participants will be interested in both events. More details can be found at The Continuum Models and Discrete Systems conference website.

Currency exchange
Changing currency in Israel is expensive due to bank charges. We do not, however, recommend that you buy Israeli currency abroad. We suggest that you pay your hotel bill in foreign currency (which will also save you the 18% value added tax). We also advise you to limit your currency exchanges to a minimum as a bank charge is made on each exchange, in addition to the charge made for each traveller's check cashed. Possibly the best way to save is through the use of a credit card. All major credit cards are widely accepted in Israel.

Location
Shoresh is a lovely rural community located in the mountains about 16 km (10 miles) west of the capital city Jerusalem. Public bus service is available every hour from the main bus terminal in Jerusalem, the trip lasting about 15 minutes. Tel Aviv, the principal commercial city in Israel, is 45 minutes away by car. In the past, Shoresh was an agricultural community near the main road Tel Aviv - Jerusalem. Today it is a rural suburb of Jerusalem, which includes a modern resort hotel where the conference will be held. The conference hotel is fully air conditioned and has an olympic sized swimming pool. Shoresh also boasts some of the loveliest scenery in the Judean Mountains. Hikes in the nearby Itzhak Rabin National Park, which is 30 minutes away by foot, are highly recommended. Further details about the conference site can be downloaded by clicking here: Shoresh Holiday Complex.

Climate and clothing
Although the days will be quite warm (typical maximum is 28-30 Celsius), the humidity is low (typically 30%), the evenings and nights are cool (typical minimum is 18-20). During the day, light summer clothing is recommended; for the evenings, a light sweater is sometimes needed. It never rains in June.

Conference banquet
The conference banquet will be held on Saturday, 28 June.

Workshop tour
Workshop tour to a stalactite cave and a winery will take place on Saturday, 28 June.
