Course requirements:

Pre-requisite course: 274107 The Cell, Structure and Function 2.

Lectures: Participation infrontal lectures is voluntary.

Laboratory classes:
Participation in laboratory classesand presentation of laboratory material to instructors is compulsory. Studentswho are absent from laboratory classes without undue reason (illness, armyreserve duties, mourning etc.) will not be permitted to take the finalexamination.

In the event that students do notmanage to complete the laboratory assignment in the allotted laboratorytime, they should complete the class in their own free time. The microscopylaboratory is available for student study 24 hours per day.

Each student will receive a microscope.Microscopes should be stored (upright) in the student's locker in the laboratory. icroscopes may not be removed from the Rappaport Faculty Building underany circumstances, whatsoever.

Each student will also receive twosets of histology slides. These histology slides are prepared in the histologylaboratory of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology and should betreated with due care. Students are required to maintain the order of theslides return each slide to the appropriate place in the slide boxes.

At the start of each laboratory classthere will be a short introductory demonstration in which the slides willbe presented in a videotape format or in real-time microscopy.

The students will work at their ownpace using the laboratory course instruction book (in Hebrew). The useof an atlas is essential for the practical laboratory classes.  Eachstudent will be assigned a laboratory instructor, to whom the laboratoryexercises must be presented for examination and evaluation. Students willbe asked to assess the performance of the laboratory instructor towardsthe end of the course.

Instruction with CD-ROMs:
Students will be given a practicaldemonstration on the use of CD-ROMs in histology in the Computing Facilityof the Faculty. This will be a non-interactive "master class" demonstration. These CD-ROMs will be available for individual use and study in the computingfacility on request.

Tests and examinations :
During the course there will be3-4 practical tests. These are regarded as "instructional" or "educational"and the results will not form part of the final examination.  In orderto prepare for the final examination, sets of "unseen" slides will be distributedin the last laboratory class.
The final examination is dividedinto two parts. 50% of the final mark is based on multiple choice theoryquestions. 50% of the final mark is a practical test based on identificationof unseen histological preparations. Students must succeed in both parts.Failure in one part will mean that the student will receive a fail gradeand will be required to re-sit the whole exam.
