Political Activity

I believe that everyone should be politically and socially active. I think it is our responsibility to stand up for what we believe in and voice our opinions. Being an Israeli I can say that politics has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.

One event that shaped my life and my view on political activity was the assassination of the late, Israeli Prime Minster, Yitzchak Rabin may he rest in peace. On Nov. 4, 1995 I had plans on going to the rally for peace, in support of Rabin; however, I was lazy and decided to stay home. I am still upset with myself for not going and showing my support to a person who literarily gave his life for my future.

Living in Israel in 1995 was not easy. Rabin was working on achieving peace with the Palestinians while terror attacks were occurring frequently. Many people disagreed with Rabin's method of negotiation with the Palestinians. Months before the murder there were thousands of signs calling Rabin a traitor, a murderer, and other vicious and horrible things - AND I DID NOTHING ABOUT IT! as a result I see myself as partly guilty of the murder of Rabin. An atmosphere had been created whereby it seemed as if most Israelis would like Rabin done away with. I was not there to voice my support for Rabin and his way. I believed his actions were the right ones at the time, and my support was passive... too passive...

I have learned that passive support does not get you anywhere. Actually, it does damage! I have vowed to stand up for what I believe in and voice my opinions, even when they are not the popular ones!

I respect anyone who voices their opinion, even if they are opposed to mine. Showing support and voicing opinions are one thing, however, when supports turns to violence - may it be physical or verbal, that is where the line is drawn. Violence and intimidation are NEVER the correct response.
