The Technion came into existence as a training college for engineers. After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the Technion began the process of conversion into a modern technological university, covering all major fields of engineering, science, architecture, and medicine. In the early 1950s, it began the move from its original campus to its current modern 1.2 square kilometer campus, Technion City, on the eastern slopes of Mount Carmel. Today the Technion has more than 11,000 students, of whom more than 2,000 are graduate students.
